Nikon Solutions to be first public showing of Nikon D3X DSLR

We're looking forward to meeting all of you that make it to Nikon Solutions at Olympia today and tomorrow - we were in to load the f2 Freelance stall last night and it certainly looks like it's going to be a bumper show. As well as stage and studio shooting opportunities, including catwalk fashion shows, portraits, bridal and macro, Nikon promised access to the very latest kit. The company is very much living up to this promise with their latest DSLR, the top of the range D3x launched last Monday, at the show (and in the shops by late December). To describe the D3x as formidable doesn’t quite do justice to the new DSLR which offers a 24.5 megapixel FX, or full frame, format CMOS sensor boasting an ISO range of 100 to 1600. The shutter is made of a Kevlar/carbon fiber composite, and the EXPEED image processing engine enables it to shoot at up to 5 fps.

Expert technical advice will be on hand, as well as free masterclasses and seminars, speakers including internationally acclaimed wildlife photographer Andy Rouse. On the f2 Freelance Photographer stall we’re interested to view folios, talk about all things Freelance and we hope also to have a few copies of Alex Bailey's new book, which he will be siging after his presentation around 4 o'clock.

New for 2008 at Nikon Solutions is the addition of The Magnum Masterclass in collaboration with HP. Themed masterclasses led by award-winning photographers and industry experts, including John Clements, Uzair Kharawala, Martin Grahame-Dunn and Gareth Jones, will be running both on stage and in the studio. Solutions Expo also offers the opportunity to try out the latest products from some of the imaging industry’s leading brands – including HP, Mitsubishi, Epson, Lexar and Apple, as well as how Nikon digital cameras and wireless technology can enhance your workflow. Solutions Expo also features  the Discovery Awards Gallery foregrounding the work of emerging photographers from colleges and universities around the UK in this exclusive exhibition, all brought to you by the Nikon Academy.

digitalrailroad.net

Online photo library digitalrailroad.net, featured in the June/July 2007 issue of f2 Freelance, ceased trading on 1 Nov. Initial hopes of marketing Digital Railroad as a going concern have come to nothing and liquidator Diablo Management, is now selling off the company’s hardware. To this end it has destroyed all image files hitherto held on Digital Railroad servers. There are no plans to reimburse part used subscriptions.

In respect of monies collected after 14 November 2008 and until 19 December 2008 only however, Digital Railroad will continue to collect fees for images used, and forward to the photographer 70% of the proceeds.

An information page for Digital Railroad Inc has been set up by the liquidator www.diablomanagement.com which can be viewed at www.diablomanagement.com/announcements/digital-railroad-inc.html

Photographer's Gallery

Today marks something of a milestone in British Photography as, after 37 years, The Photographer’s Gallery has closed. The closure is however only temporary  as the gallery, founded by Sue Davies OBE in 1971, is moving from its long time home in Great Newport Street to new premises a ten minute walk away behind Oxford St: opening at 16-18 Ramillies Street on 6th December. The good news is that the Ramillies Street Photographers Gallery will have double the gallery space of Great Newport St and access will remain free of charge. For further details about the new space, a map showing how to get there, and details of forthcoming events visit The Photographer’s Gallery web site at www.photonet.org.uk

BJP Vision

Great to see so many people, who'd travelled from all parts of the country to attend BJP Vision at the Islington Business Design Centre; and to discover so many of you are already subscribers to f2 Freelance. Our Editor David Land spent the entire day looking at folios, and hearing stories of the ups and downs of freelancing. Several that have a message for a wider audience will be making their way into f2's pages over the coming months

One conversation point for the day turned out to be the Moving to London Graduate Guide in the current issue. An awful lot of copies were sold over the course of the day, with many specific mentions of the use of, and need for, the guide; but it also provoked quite a bit of debate.

Some students (notably from Carmarthen College and Newport, but also from Yorkshire and the North West) were unconvinced of the need to move to London to begin their freelance career. Here at f2 Freelance we've long thought a Moving to London Graduate Guidean absolute necessity, as London can look very daunting to someone moving here for the first time. Certainly there is a healthy living to be made outside London in the, increasingly sophisticated, social and wedding arena, but it's enormously difficult to make your mark in editorial from outside town. It's also very much the case that the great majority of desks commissioning freelance photography in the UK are in London.

We hope those of you moving to London, to take the next step on the freelance career path, this year find our guide really useful. Jen Allan, who compiled it with the help of several top freelances, moved down from Sheffield University in June so much of it's written from bang up to date personal experience.

We are however always keen to hear opinions contrary to our own, and success stories made long distances from London, so if you've comments, criticisms, or contributions to make on this issue please go to the f2 blog www.f2freelancephotographer.blogspot.com and get blogging - freelancing certainly isn't going to get any easier over the credit crunch months ahead and here at f2 we're keen to hear any and all suggestions and stories about generating work, or for that matter the pitfalls you've encountered along the way.

BJP Vision

Photovision Roadshow

Today we're getting ready for BJP Vision at the Business Design Centre in Islington tomorrow (Friday 7/11/08). As ever at Vision F2 Editor David Land and Publisher Simon James will be on our stand to view your portfolios and we'll also have back issues and subscriptions at a reduced rate for the duration of the event. Also attending this year is F2 Editorial Assistant, Jen Allan, who wrote our current issue's Moving To London, Graduate Guide, having done so herself in the summer – so if you’ve any questions or concerns about moving to the big city Jen’s the one to ask - come and see her on the F2 stand!

Vision opens at 10.00 am sharp tomorrow: with lectures and seminars beginning at 10.30. First up is with Sam Faulkner, closely followed by rising star Simon Roberts, so make sure you get there early!
